Alicia wrote her gardening song, "Chard and Chives," in 1969, at the same time she was creating the book Living on the Earth. That year, she devoted hours each day to working in the community garden at Wheeler Ranch commune, loving each new skill she learned, and delighted by the fresh produce the garden offered in response to her care.
