In the 1960s and 1970s, activists of all ages took to the streets of the USA, and elsewhere, passionately protesting the US invasions of Viet Nam and Cambodia, and demanding equal rights for people of all ethnicities, genders, cultures and coloration.
Legendary jazz organist Larry Young, his friend and collaborator, multi-instrumentalist (drums, percussion and Moog analog synthesizer) Joe Gallivan, and their friends Steven Nicholas (electric guitar and proto guitar synthesizer) and Jimmy Molneiri (drums), as the group Love Cry Want, gave voice to these movements with psychedelic rock and avant-garde jazz improvisation.
One afternoon in June 1972, at an anti-war rally in LaFayette Park, across the street from the White House, the band aimed their speakers at the President's office, turned on their reel-to-reel tape recorder, and let their instruments proclaim the joys of freedom and the anguish of war, until an enraged Richard Nixon demanded that the power to the park be shut off.
For this new LP release of the original historic recording for Lion Productions, Alicia Bay Laurel designed the graphics, wrote the liner notes, and curated the vintage photos.
For the front cover, she chose Howard Ruffner's photos from the Kent State Massacre on May 4, 1970, when the Ohio National Guard opened fire on unarmed students protesting the invasion of Cambodia, killing four and wounding nine. On the back cover is Ruffner's iconic image of Coretta Scott King and Senator George McGovern, arm in arm, leading a peace march in Washington DC in 1969.
