In 1967 and 1968, at the height of the hippie movement in San Francisco, Alicia Bay Laurel was living on a houseboat across the Golden Gate Bridge, at Gate 5, Sausalito. There, Alicia brought her artworks for comment to her mentor, Greek artist and bon vivant, Jean "Yanco" Varda, whose colorful home was half of what had once been the Vallejo ferry boat (the other half was the home of author/philosopher Alan Watts.)

In 1969, in a forest hideaway at Wheeler Ranch commune in Sonoma County, Alicia began writing, illustrating and designing her beloved compendium of bohemian living skills, Living on the Earth, now published in its 50th anniversary, 5th English edition.  As part of the celebration, Alicia designed this 100% cotton t-shirt for her friends still living on Gate 5, and for those who sail in their dreams, everywhere.
